Not illustrated. 1919 Excerpt: ...Many need higher ideals of the preparation which a teacher should have. Many are too easily satisfied with their attainments. Many have not yet seen clearly the moral wrong done to boys and girls when they are robbed of the golden opportunities of childhood and youth--through the inefficiency of the school. Finally may I quote certain "fundamental principles of action" proposed by Professor Cubberley which teachers, administrators, boards of education aiid even the public could well afford to keep in mind--1. Schools have been ordered established by the State for the education of the children of the'State, and each child in the community is entitled to as good an education and as good teachers as the community can afford. 2. Only the best education within the means of the community should be provided, and this can be the case only when the teachers and supervisors employed are the best it is possible to obtain with the money at hand. 3. The schools exist, in no sense, to afford places for teachers. No one is entitled by right to a teacher's position, except on the one basis of being the best-prepared and the most professionally in earnest teacher available. 4. Teachers within the system must keep themselves professionally alive and render good community service as a condition to the retention of their places. And as tests by which a teacher may judge herself daily, an educator of recognized authority suggests that she might interrogate herself as follows: "Is my interest in my work so contagious that my pupils catch from me an eager interest in what we are doing together? Is my work thoughtful and resourceful rather than superficial and conventional? Do I get at the individuality of my students so that each is distinct in my mind? Do I treat ...
